The spiritual meaning or essence of Badger is one of freedom, to encourage the energies of Badger into your life will bring wisdom, tidiness and clarity of thought. The freedom that Badger encourages, comes from living in the now moment. Badger symbolism means clarity, protection, freedom, contentment, wisdom and justice.
Badger represents freedom to do as one pleases, the acceptance of responsibility and duty. Without Black there can be no white, without night there can be no day. Badger brings understanding, wisdom and contentment. With badger on your side the world becomes an easier place because badgers energy is one of now and living for the moment. With the Badger as your totem animal or guide, you can expect organisation and neatness to follow. If badger is called to enter your life he will help restore order to your domestic environment, the badger is clean and proud to exhibit and extend hospitality to both the rabbits and foxes. It is not unknown for one sett (badgers home is called a sett) to extend to sharing with a variety of animals. The Rat, Mole and Weasel have also been known to share with Badger. The ferocity of the Badger when it attacks is respected by all animals, a respectful fear that has been earned by countless generations. But along with this is also the wisdom that badger has aquired and passed on to it's young. The Badger has no fear and will defend it's family to it's death, this is the secret of it's ferocious attacks. It does not attack without good cause, it is the belief in the good cause that enables the badger to win. It stands steadfast and will not back down, it has been known to stand side by side with others and fight, to form allegiances and create allies. With it's short strong front paws it is a natural digger, it is able to dig and prepare a new home very quickly. This animal is equally happy both above and below ground, above ground it is capable of running at speeds of up to 19 mph, it is short sighted and is frequently portrayed in cartoons as old and wise, the truth is that it loves to play and is a communal natural leader. Able to move in both worlds above ground and below, below ground it eats the roots of herbs, shrubs and vegetables it is often portrayed or characterised as the Dr. Lawyer or wise one and with just cause. The extensive knowledge aquired and passed on by successive generations has made the Badger a totem or power animal to welcome into your fold. The boar, sow or cub all offer their own qualities, to recognise each other and contribute towards harmony within the sett they mark each other with urine, family units have been known to stay together and grow to a size of up to 15 badgers sharing one sett. Also sharing with other animals, the saying blood is thicker than water is prevelant in badgers society, they do enter a state of semi hibernation during winter and should they be disturbed they have been known to extend their cuisine to small rabbits and other such food. A grumpy sleepy badger is a frightening sight. Badger represents freedom. As the full moon takes her shape on the 10th January she takes on the power of the Snow Moon or Hunger Moon. With the growing power of the Alder Tree coming to glory, the Mistletoe Berries providing food and shelter for the Mistle thrush, the Robin and Raven.
We should take this time to appreciate the power around us, take solace in the guidance from the power animals surrounding us and the message they inspire us to believe. On the 6th day after the full moon the trees will be chosen, the mistletoe cut with a golden sickle. The Alder Tree (Fearne) represents the solitaire the one who treads his own path and leads from the front. Now is the time to be heard, be seen and share wisdom. To look for those around you with a hidden curriculum. Some of the deities surrounding us include the Archangel Gabriel who stands in the West facing East, ready to embrace those that come forward. Odin with Sleipnir his eight legged horse racing his chariot racing across the sky with the sylphs and creating a trail for Valkyra to haunt the battlefields and collect her warriors, also for Freya to bring in the new energy, spreading love, peace and fertility across the lands and encouraging the souls looking for peace to follow her back to the halls of Valhalla. Bran the Celtic riverman and leader of men a giant of a man, who guided his followers for seven years after his body was no more and to this day protects London. The Ravens in the tower acting as his sentinels. The Alder Tree will provide a sprig for under the pillow to ward off a cold, it’s bark will produce an elixir to cleanse the blood and rid the body of infection. The Snow moon encourages the qualities of this tree a sprig or buds kept close to the skin will aid arthritis, the bark ground by the Druid will aid stomach upsets caused by the seasonal changes in diet. Sacred Mistletoe taken from this tree six days after the snow moon will encourage fertility and prosperity, it brings forward the pure energies from the four directions and encourages alchemy and spells to work. The Alder tree awakens the Crown Chakra from its winter reverie and the energies are encouraged to flow from the divine feminine Muhn to Gaia through the bodies energy centres. The Snow moon as she releases her hold brings the tides closer to the shore, the fish, turtles, shellfish and more back to their birthplace to sporn and encourage the circle of life to continue. Those that survive the hunter will produce the strongest offspring.
