What makes a site or location sacred? What does the term "sacred" actually mean?

Which admittedly is a contradiction in terms but will suffice in respect to the sacred sites we have visited and recognised as worthy of such a status. Throughout our travels, we have had the opportunity to explore various locations and have noticed their distinctive qualities. These differences can be apparent right away in some instances, while in others they become apparent upon reflection and reminiscing about our experiences. A sacred place is comprised of various contributing factors, which can range from just one to many. Some of these factors are acknowledged by the local community, while others hold personal meaning only to us.
Within the realm of these diverse destinations lies a special category known as sacred places.
