What makes a site or location sacred? What does the term "sacred" actually mean?
In todays world where scientific evaluation furthered by irrefutable evidence. Sacred is defined as: connected with God or a God or dedicated to a religious purpose and so deserving veneration. Which admittedly is a contradiction in terms but will suffice in respect to the sacred sites we have visited and recognised as worthy of such a status. Throughout our travels, we have had the opportunity to explore various locations and have noticed their distinctive qualities. These differences can be apparent right away in some instances, while in others they become apparent upon reflection and reminiscing about our experiences. A sacred place is comprised of various contributing factors, which can range from just one to many. Some of these factors are acknowledged by the local community, while others hold personal meaning only to us.
Within the realm of these diverse destinations lies a special category known as sacred places. These extraordinary sites are composed of various contributing factors, ranging from tangible elements to intangible qualities that may only resonate with certain individuals. Some aspects are widely acknowledged by the local population, while others remain hidden gems that only reveal themselves to us.
A sacred place is not solely defined by its physical attributes; it encompasses something deeper and more profound. It can be an ancient temple where prayers have been offered for centuries or a humble natural setting that evokes a sense of tranquility within us. It can be the energy felt in the air or the stories whispered through generations.
In recognizing these sacred places, we become attuned to their significance on a personal level. Our own experiences and connections with these locations shape our understanding and appreciation for their sanctity. They hold meaning beyond what meets the eye, intertwining history, culture, spirituality, and personal growth into one extraordinary tapestry. As we traverse this world filled with diverse landscapes and cultures, let us cherish these sacred places - both those acknowledged by society at large and those known only to us alone. For it is through these encounters that we deepen our connection with humanity's collective heritage and forge lasting memories that enrich our lives in immeasurable ways. From the beautiful Eastern coasts of Essex, Suffolk, and Norfolk to the stunning Western coasts of Wales in places like Cardigan, Aberystwyth, and Harlech. From the majestic mountains of Snowdonia to the charming coastal communities surrounding Anglesey. And let's not forget about the enchanting locations like Glastonbury or the serene Isles of Iona in the North West, and Holy Island in the North East.
Glastonbury, with its rich history and mystical aura, holds a special place in the hearts of many. Throughout the ages, it has been regarded as a spiritual haven, not only for mainland Europe but also for the Celtic lands, stretching as far east as Greece, Italy and Israel. Following the 1st Roman invasion in 54bc, Glastonbury played a vital role in reviving spirituality and preserving ancient traditions. The significance of Glastonbury as a spiritual capital cannot be understated. It became a sanctuary where people sought solace and connection with something greater than themselves. The very essence of spirituality was revived within its sacred grounds, offering refuge to those seeking enlightenment. While Canterbury suffered the loss of physical evidence held in trust by the Druids during pillaging, Glastonbury did rise and did avoid the wrath of Rome for more than a century after the fall of canterbury. This preservation speaks volumes about its importance as a custodian of ancient knowledge and wisdom.
Today, Glastonbury continues to draw people from all walks of life who are seeking spiritual nourishment and enlightenment. Its landscape is adorned with sites such as the famous Glastonbury Tor, Chalice Well and the Abbey ruins – tangible reminders of its historical significance. The cellars of the Vatican to this day hold some of the secrets of the Ancient Druids of Briton.
The inclusion of these sacred sites is not arbitrary; each one holds a unique and special place in our hearts. Some may be widely recognized for their spiritual significance, while others remain known only to a select few within local communities. However, regardless of their level of recognition, these sites possess an undeniable essence or spirit that touches those who are open to experiencing it.
We believe that if you are able to recognize the sacredness of these locations, if you can feel the energy that radiates from them, then we are truly privileged to share our experiences with you. Our hope is that by immersing yourself in the beauty and reverence of these sites, you too can connect with something greater than yourself - whether it be a sense of peace, enlightenment or simply a deeper understanding of our shared human experience.
Together, we can honour and respect these places as gateways to wisdom and inspiration, and appreciate them as Sacred Sites.
